Spaceballs will forever be one of the greatest spoof movies of all time, but really anything by Mel Brooks fits nicely into that category and it should come as no surprise that his irreverent, unapologetically offensive humor is was shaped my own similar brand of humor from an early age! Dark Helmet fits pretty well into the “why didn’t I add him in sooner?” category, but I feel this time I really did save it for the best time, as what with all the new Star Wars films being pumped out in order to assure that that series never dies really does make Yogurt’s promise of a sequel “The Search for More Money” all the more applicable.
I’m probably walking into a real shitstorm with my next statement, but hey I’m no stranger to having opinions that go against the brainless masses that enrage them, so here I go! I really don’t care much about Star Wars. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good series and I enjoy them, but I don’t find them to be the all encompassing gospel like many do. More to the point I have always, ALWAYS found Darth Vader to be a big, dumb, stupid character. I’m not sure if it’s his mannerisms, or his goofy looking mask or just that he’s SO stoic and menacing in otherwise cheesy films (Yes people, they were cheesy in the original trilogy and they still are) that I just can’t help but laugh at him.
I dunno, but whatever the reason he’s always just come off as a big cornball to me but I knew if I just added in Darth Vader people would think I was being series, which I most certainly would not be, so putting in the Rick Moranis double got the message across much better, that and I love Spaceballs and would watch it over the original trilogy any day. All this really makes it sound like I’m shitting on Star Wars, again I don’t dislike it. I see why they’re loved and they are good films (when George Lucas isn’t raping them) but I don’t think they’re the best things ever made and I get really tired of seeing it all over the place and feel it’s a tired old series that needs to be put out to pasture finally. But that’s me. My favorite series of all time is also nearly 900 chapters long with no end in sight so... what do I know?
